Mombasa is Kenya’s second biggest city, where excitement, exploration and new experiences make for a memorable vacation to Africa’s beautiful coastal region. Nestled along the southern coast, the unofficial Kenyan capital is laced with mesmerising beaches (namely Lamu and Diani) that summon backpackers to embark on a relaxing sunny getaway. Since the 15th century, Mombasa has been a very influential trading port, and its history accentuates every corner of the city. A stroll through the streets introduces you to buildings, fruit vendors, and bright and vibrant people. Wander along the town’s old section will connect you with the city’s Swahili roots, and a visit to one of the 16th-century forts will teach you about the painful past of the country during the slave trade, and how the area’s progress was built on a treacherous history of inequality.

On the brighter side, its proximity to the Indian Ocean offers it with exotic beaches, beautiful marine life, and top-notch hotels. During your commute to Mombasa, ensure that you take advantage of all the outdoor safaris excursions, to camping trips, to swimming, fishing, and sports. The exquisite nightlife is incomparable, and cuisine ranges from Italian, British, Chinese and Indian, not to mention traditional Kenyan seafood, spices, and concoctions. Absorb the beautiful art designs, stroll past ancient buildings and pick up souvenirs at the curio shops to forever remember your Mombasa travel. You can find vendors selling Kenyan souvenirs and other items on every corner, and the only way to truly experience the area in its truest fashion is by foot.
